The most common mistake homeowners make is hanging art too high. The professional designer’s rule is to hang a piece so that its center is at average eye level, which is approximately 145-152 cm (57-60 inches) from the floor. This ensures the art feels connected to the room and its furniture, not floating on the wall.

For a visually balanced look, the artwork (or a group of artworks) should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture it is hanging above. You should also leave a gap of about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) between the bottom of the frame and the top of the sofa or headboard.

It doesn’t have to be a perfect match, but it should feel harmonious. A great approach is to choose a piece of art that contains at least one or two of the accent colours from your rug, cushions, or other decor. Alternatively, a simple and elegant black and white piece can work beautifully in any colour scheme.
